Progress Missouri is Hiring a Deputy Communications Director

Progress Missouri and its sister organization, Progress Missouri Education, seek a Deputy Communications Director to coordinate proactive public communications, digital media and campaign communications projects under the direction of the Communications Director and Executive Director. The person we’re looking for will have excellent oral, written and online communications skills, experience speaking on the record, comfort with social media platforms and an ability to handle multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously.

Progress Missouri is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization that combines cutting edge online organizing and communications with rapid and hard-hitting earned media strategies. Our mission is to provide a strong, credible voice in advancing progressive solutions to critical community problems. But we don’t do that on our own – we work as a communications team for the entire progressive community.

Our Deputy Communications Director will stay busy:

  • Executing proactive communications strategies to advance public policy in Missouri, including Medicaid expansion and other proposals to build an economy that works for everyone
  • Generating earned media, driving social media conversations, writing press releases, pitching stories and cultivating media contacts.
  • Building relationships with local reporters and editors regarding pressing public policy questions
  • Serving as a communications advisor to Progress Missouri allies and partners
  • Driving rapid response on priority issues
  • Developing content for online media channels
  • Creating and responding to earned media opportunities
  • Travel throughout the state, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

The person we’re looking for has:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong instincts for identifying and capitalizing on emerging stories
  • Passions for social justice, healthier communities and an economy that works for everyone
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects, sudden deadlines, and curveballs
  • Experience navigating and driving content on the interwebs


  • Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience, including health and dental insurance
  • Location: Jefferson City, Missouri
  • Timing: Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis with the goal of filing the position by December so don’t delay in applying
  • Duration: At least through May 2015
