Makes Perfect Sense Kander Will Address National Voting Rights Crisis

Jason Kander talking with voters

Former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander announced a new initiative called Let America Vote

Let America Vote is a direct response to the continued attacks on voting rights across the country. Just last year, the Missouri legislature pushed a nefarious voter photo ID law that will make it harder for approximately 200,000 Missourians to cast their ballots in upcoming elections.

On top of that, the law was completely unfunded. With revenue shortfalls this year in Missouri because of large corporate tax breaks passed previous years, a budget crunch is looming. So Governor Greitens has proposed funding a mere 14% of the new photo ID measure's cost.

From the Post-Dispatch:

The law requires Missourians to show photo identification before voting, or sign a binding legal document that says they are who they say they are.

But it also requires the state to foot the bill to provide photo identification to anyone who doesn’t have one and wants one, absorbing the costs of any documents needed along the way, including birth certificates, divorce decrees, marriage licenses, social security cards or naturalization papers to prove citizenship.

Without sufficient funding for those costs, the personal identification requirements “shall not be enforced," the law says.

The message is clear in Missouri right now, funding a law that makes it hard to vote is more important than...

  • Health care — Gov. Greitens has proposed to end in-home care and nursing home services for more than 20,000 people with disabilities.
  • Education — $350 million was slashed by Greitens from K-12 funding and $31 million from school busing programs.
  • Roads — MODoT has been in the midst of a funding crisis for years now with no end in sight.

Missouri is the perfect example of extreme politicians putting their agendas ahead of actual problems.

Hopefully, Kander's new initiative can have some positive impact here in Missouri and begin expanding voting rights instead of shrinking them.
